Check your mailbox: What you need to know to complete the Census

As we get closer to Census night, Tuesday 11 August, many households are now receiving letters in their mailboxes with instructions on how to participate in the 2026 Census.
“People can complete the Census online, by paper or with help from the Census team. Please check your mailbox,” Cuc Nguyen, Census multilingual spokesperson, says.
“Support will be available for people who need it. You can access translated information materials on our website, as well as in-person support at pop-up-hubs and fill-in-the-form sessions.”
“Every answer matters in the Census, because Census data is used to inform decisions about transport, schools, health care, infrastructure and business.”
There are three things everyone needs to know to complete the Census.
- You can complete it online or with a paper form
Most households will receive instructions to complete the Census online, with paper forms available on request for those who prefer them.
Some households will receive a Census paper form in the mail or have one delivered by a Census field officer. These households will still be able to complete their Census online if they prefer.
- Complete it now: you don’t have to wait
Once you receive your instructions, you can complete your Census straight away if you already know where you’ll be on Census night Tuesday 11 August.
- Everyone in Australia needs to participate in the Census
Everyone staying at your house on Census night needs to be included on a Census form, regardless of their visa status. This includes international students and visitors.
It will take the average household around 30 minutes to complete the form.
