The Census is happening this August and every answer matters
Every five years, the Census counts every person and household in Australia. The Census asks questions about your age, ancestry, work and what languages you use at home.
The next Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026.
Census data is used by governments, community groups and businesses to plan services for people, families and communities. In the Census, every answer matters to help understand what Australia needs now and into the future.
Who needs to take part?
Everyone in Australia on Census night must be included on the Census form. This includes visa holders, international students and visitors, babies and anyone staying in your house on Census night.
Are my answers private?
Your answers are private and protected by law. Your personal information is not shared with other government agencies, including the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Tax Office or Services Australia.
How do I complete the Census?
You can complete the Census online, on a paper form or with help from the Census team. Instructions on how to complete the Census will be delivered to households from late July. If you know where you’ll be on Census night, you can complete your Census as soon as you receive your instructions.
For people staying in accommodation such as hotels, motels or student accommodation, instructions to complete your Census will be provided by accommodation staff.
