From 1 June: 20% discount on car registration in Victoria to ease cost-of-living pressures
War in the Middle East continues to push up prices at the pump and put families under pressure.

That’s why the Allan Labor Government is slashing the cost of catching the train –and driving your car.
The government previously made public transport across the state free during April and May, and will halve the cost of public transport fares for the rest of the year.
Now, the Victorian Budget 2026/27 will provide 20 per cent back off your registration.
Currently, light vehicle registration costs up to $930.70 every year, for every car.

With 20% off registration, a driver with one car will receive up to $186, and a family with two cars will receive up to $372.
It’s all about putting money back in the pockets of Victorians who are paying more than ever for fuel.
The measure will be included in the Victorian government’s 2026-27 budget, with the government to forgo around $750 million in revenue to pay for it.

How 20% off registration works
From 1 June, eligible vehicle owners can apply for 20% off registration through Service Victoria.
Applications will be open until 31 July –so you have two months to claim the rebate.
The rebate will refund you back 20 per cent of your registration payment for 2025/26.
It will be open to Victorians who own light vehicles for personal use: cars, utes, and anything under 4.5 tonnes.

You can claim rebates for up to two vehicles in your name, regardless of how many vehicles are in the household.
Premier Jacinta Allan said in a statement that she is determined to “help Victorians who are under pressure”.
“Like cheaper PT [public transport], this won’t fix everything, but it’s immediate action I can take to make a difference”, she said. (I/C, NQ)
