Vietnamese Museum Australia Secures Town Planning Permit for Landmark Project in Sunshine
Melbourne, AUS 17/01/2025. Vietnamese Museum Australia is delighted to announce the successful receipt of a town planning permit for its proposed museum at 121 Durham Road, Sunshine. The permit, issued by the Department of Transport and Planning, marks a historic milestone in the establishment of Australia’s first Vietnamese museum.
This decision represents a significant step forward for both the Vietnamese Australian and multicultural communities across the nation. The museum, a dedicated space to preserve and share the incredible stories of the Vietnamese ‘boat people’, will pay tribute to their enduring spirit, resilience, and contributions to Australian society.
“We are deeply grateful to Brimbank City Council, the Victorian State Government and the Federal Government for their unwavering support throughout this process,” said Tammy Nguyen, CEO of Vietnamese Museum Australia. “The establishment of this museum is not just a celebration of Vietnamese culture but also an important platform to preserve the remarkable history of the Vietnamese refugee diaspora and highlight their significant contributions to the fabric of multicultural Australia. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with local and national stakeholders as we take the next steps in bringing this historic project to life.”
The Vietnamese Museum Australia will provide a space for the community to connect, learn, and celebrate the cultural diversity that shapes Australia. It will showcase the history, traditions, and stories of the Vietnamese diaspora, ensuring that future generations can engage with and honour these rich narratives.
Quotes Attributable to Sarah Connolly MP, Member for Laverton:
“It’s wonderful to see that Sunshine will be home to Australia’s first Vietnamese Museum. Melbourne’s West is home to a vibrant Vietnamese community, and this museum will reflect the deep and complex history of the achievements and contributions they have made here in Australia”.
Quotes Attributable to Mayor Thuy Dang, Brimbank City Council:
“We are excited to welcome the Vietnamese Museum Australia to Brimbank. As a refugee to Australia myself, I am thrilled that stories and histories like mine will be collected, preserved and on display at Victoria’s newest multi-cultural museum. We are proud to host such an important cultural destination in the City of Brimbank.”
Vietnamese Museum Australia would also like to express thanks to our consultant team, especially TRACT, the town planning consultants, whose expertise and dedication were instrumental in securing the planning permit.
As the museum embarks on its journey toward establishment, the team eagerly anticipates the commencement of construction and looks forward to working closely with the community, Brimbank City Council, as well as both State and Commonwealth governments, to bring this project to life for current and future generations.
