Police were called about 3.30pm on Thursday, 1 October. The victim, from Mickleham, was taken to hospital with injuries that Victoria Police described as non-life-threatening. Detectives from the Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit are investigating.

9News reported that the man was standing at traffic lights when a man and two women emerged from a white car and attacked him with punches and kicks, leaving him unconscious. The broadcaster described his initial condition as critical but said he was subsequently stable.

Although 9News characterised the incident as an unprovoked attack, Victoria Police said it was understood that a verbal altercation occurred before the assault. Officers were told that three alleged offenders —one male and two females —fled the scene. The circumstances leading to the violence remain under investigation.

The assault occurred just metres from where local grocer Van Viet Truong was fatally attacked two months earlier. Police have since increased patrols along the strip, but traders told the broadcaster that further action was needed to address antisocial behaviour.

Brimbank Mayor Virginia Tachos —described the latest violence as distressing for the community. She said police presence was important, while also calling for sustainable preventative measures to improve safety.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.
