A FAIRER AND MORE SECURE MIGRATION SYSTEM

THE HON ANDREW GILES MP

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs

MEDIA RELEASE

A FAIRER AND MORE SECURE MIGRATION SYSTEM

FRIDAY, 5 JULY 2024

The Albanese Labor Government is delivering better wage opportunities for all workers by lifting the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) to $73,000 and introducing new legislation to index the TSMIT, ensuring wages can grow fairly after a decade freeze under Liberal Governments.

The Albanese Government is delivering on its commitment to clean up the migration mess left by Peter Dutton and the former Liberal Government, this week introducing the Migration Amendment (Strengthening Sponsorship and Nomination Processes) Bill 2024 to Parliament. The Bill will prevent the visa system being used to undercut the Australian labour market and provide better rights to workers.

After a 10 year freeze on wages by the Liberals, the Bill will mean wage growth cannot be supressed by future governments. The visa system will betted foster wage growth for all workers, Australians and migrants alike.

Raising the TSMIT is part of the Government’s actions to bring migration back to sustainable levels.

This Bill also establishes a register of approved work sponsors, building on the Government’s agenda of stamping out exploitation of workers because of their visa status and clamping down on businesses who do the wrong thing.

This register will provide greater protections for workers, helping to tackle misuse of the visa system and delivering a more prosperous, fair and secure migration system that works in the national interest.
