Footscray: Man fatally shot after charging at police with knife


A man has died after being shot by police in Footscray, Melbourne West.

Officers were called to the intersection of Paisley St and Albert St in Footscray outside the plaza to reports of a man armed with a knife about 9pm on Thursday, 17 April.

Two police officers attending the scene found the man and instructed him to drop the weapon.

The man then charged towards the police, still armed with the knife, and was shot by both officers.

The 35-year-old man, of no fixed address, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Victoria Police Commander Tim Tully said he understood the officers did not deploy capsicum spray or use their tasers before shooting the man. 

“Police undertake specific training and are equipped with a range of tactical options are equipment to keep the community safe,” Tully said.

“In these circumstances, the members deemed a firearm was appropriate.

“That will certainly form part of the investigation by the homicide squad”.

Homicide Squad detectives will now investigate the matter with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting.
