AVWA WRITING COMPETITION: 50 Years of Vietnamese Australian Refugees


To celebrate 50 years of Vietnamese settlement in Australia, the Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association (AVWA) is excited to announce a new writing competition.

We hope to get people talking and sharing, learning and growing from each other’s experiences.

AVWA will be holding a special event in March at the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Phillip Island that is an opportunity for members of the Vietnamese community to express their deep thanks to the Veterans and the people of Australia who have enabled us to Thrive in this wonderful country.

The winners of the writing competition will be invited to come and share their stories.

  • Category 1. “I spoke with my parents (or relatives or friends) about their experience as refugees to Australia and this is what I discovered … “
  • Category 2. “I spoke with a war Veteran about their experience, and this is what I discovered … “

The competition is free to enter. One entry per person.

Languages:

Submissions can be in either Vietnamese or English.

Originality:

Entries must be original and unpublished in any form, including print, digital media, websites, and social media. They must not be printed in books or newspapers before the competition closes.

Genre Guidelines:

Maximum length is 1,000 words.

  • Literary Memoir

Prizes for each category:
1st prize:  $500

2nd prize: $200

Encouragement prizes of $50 each may be issued

All entries must be received by email [email protected] by 5pm EST, Friday 21 February 2025.

Submission Requirements:

Please include the following personal details: full name, address, phone number, and email address.

Winning entries may be published in any of AVWA’s publications (online or print) including magazine, annual report, social media including Facebook, or website.

Winners will be invited to the 50th Anniversary Event on Phillip Island, 1 March 2025.

The judge’s decision is final.
