At the 70th Miss Korea final held on August 22nd at COEX, Seoul (South Korea), Woo Seo Yoon beat 25 other contestants to win the top title.

After her name was announced, Woo Seo Yoon said she didn’t think she would win and hadn’t prepared a speech beforehand. The beauty queen expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, and fellow contestants for their support throughout the competition.

Woo Seo Yoon, born in 2003, is the daughter of former professional basketball player Woo Ji Won. She is currently studying fine arts at Tufts University in the United States and aspires to become an international art curator.

After being crowned, the beauty queen quickly gained attention thanks to her striking height, slender figure, and appearance, which was considered to fit the image of a Korean beauty queen.

However, attention to the new Miss Universe quickly shifted when her past photos were recirculated on online forums.

Old photos resurface, sparking debate about plastic surgery.

Before becoming Miss Korea, Woo Seo Yoon appeared on several television programs with her father. Notably, in 2018, while still a high school student, she participated in a tvN reality show and gained attention for her natural, youthful appearance.

After she was crowned, old photos and videos were quickly unearthed by netizens and placed alongside her current photos.

Some viewers have commented that Woo Seo Yoon’s current facial features are quite different from her teenage years, from her eyes and nose to her overall facial structure. This has led to widespread speculation that the actress has undergone cosmetic surgery.

Some comments even questioned whether contestants who had undergone plastic surgery should be crowned in a beauty pageant. This debate quickly went beyond the realm of a beauty queen’s appearance and shifted to a discussion about the criteria of “natural beauty” in Miss Korea.

However, there is also a strong opposition to this speculation. Many argue that it is impossible to conclude whether someone has had cosmetic surgery simply by comparing photos taken many years apart.

According to them, Woo Seo Yoon has gone through puberty, matured physically, and can change her weight, makeup, hairstyle, and fashion style. In particular, photos taken for a television program when she was a teenager are completely different from images taken by a professional team for a beauty pageant.

Some argue that holding a “beauty contest” based on old photos is therefore unfounded.

The beauty queen has not confirmed whether she had surgery.

To date, Woo Seo Yoon has neither publicly confirmed nor denied having undergone plastic surgery. Many viewers believe that the difference in her appearance is not necessarily evidence of surgery.

Furthermore, the Miss Korea pageant currently does not have a rule that considers plastic surgery as a basis for disqualifying a contestant. Therefore, debating whether a beauty queen has had cosmetic surgery does not necessarily mean she has violated the competition’s regulations.

This also reflects a shift in the perception of beauty pageants in South Korea. While previously the criterion of “natural beauty” was emphasized, beauty pageants now often evaluate contestants on many aspects, from appearance, demeanor, communication skills to education and personal aspirations.

From beauty queens to stories about Korean beauty standards.

According to Naver, the controversy surrounding Woo Seo Yoon once again highlights the pressure regarding appearance in South Korea.

For decades, South Korea has been known as one of the countries with a thriving beauty industry. K-pop (Korean pop music), television dramas, and Hallyu (Korean culture) have contributed to bringing Korean standards of skin, facial features, physique, and makeup style to an international audience.

Cosmetic surgery is therefore no longer a foreign concept in Korean society. With the development of medical technology, many people choose methods ranging from dermatological treatments and non-surgical cosmetic procedures to reconstructive surgery. The scale of this industry is also clearly demonstrated by the number of international visitors to Korea.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, in 2025, the country will receive more than 2 million international patients from 201 countries and territories. Of these, approximately 1.31 million will use dermatological services, accounting for 62.9%, while cosmetic surgery will account for 11.2%, equivalent to about 233,000 people.

The South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare believes that the popularity of K-beauty (Korean beauty standards) and the Hallyu wave are among the factors driving demand from international tourists.

These figures show that cosmetic procedures have become a significant part of South Korea’s medical tourism industry. However, the growth of the cosmetic industry has also led to more frequent questions about beauty standards and pressure to maintain a certain appearance. (T/H, VNN)
