Australia Post Opens 3,500 Seasonal Jobs Ahead of Christmas Rush

Australia Post has launched a major recruitment drive for 3,500 seasonal workers across Australia —as the postal service prepares for another busy Christmas and online shopping period.

Australia Post Opens 3,500 Seasonal Jobs Ahead of Christmas Rush.

Applications are now open for positions with Australia Post and StarTrack in metropolitan and regional areas —offering thousands of Australians an opportunity to earn extra income in the lead-up to Christmas. Some positions require no previous experience, making the recruitment drive accessible to people entering the workforce or looking for temporary employment.

Among the positions available are parcel sorters, freight handlers, van drivers, forklift operators and truck drivers, with truck and forklift drivers particularly in demand.

Truck driver positions are expected to begin from early September, while parcel processing, freight handling, van driving and forklift roles will generally start from mid-October. Most of the seasonal positions are expected to finish after Christmas, although some delivery work could continue into December depending on parcel volumes.

More than 1,100 jobs available in Victoria

Victoria will receive the largest share of the seasonal recruitment drive, with more than 1,100 positions available.

More than 900 jobs are being offered in New South Wales and another 900-plus in Queensland. South Australia and Western Australia will each have more than 300 positions, while Tasmania, the ACT and Northern Territory will each have more than 20 opportunities.

On the Central Coast and in the Hunter region of New South Wales alone, Australia Post and StarTrack are looking for more than 62 seasonal team members, demonstrating that the recruitment campaign extends beyond the major capital cities into regional communities.

Pay starts at more than $35 an hour for many roles

Seasonal processing positions such as mail officers and parcel sorters start at $35.83 per hour, while some licensed positions can pay around $40 an hour or more. Employees may also be able to earn additional money through casual loadings for overtime, evening and weekend work.

Mail sorters aged 21 and over receive $35.83 an hour, with junior rates applying to younger workers, while truck driver base rates with casual loading start from $42.26 per hour. Applicants can be aged 16 and over, provided they meet relevant safe-working requirements.

The recruitment campaign comes as Australia Post prepares for the huge increase in parcel deliveries traditionally seen in the months before Christmas.

Australia Post Executive General Manager, People and Culture, Sue Davies, said seasonal workers were an important part of the organisation’s ability to serve customers during its busiest period.

Last year’s enormous Christmas parcel volumes highlighted the need for additional workers across the postal network. Davies said seasonal employment could also provide people with an opportunity to learn new skills and gain valuable workplace experience, with some employees who originally joined during previous Christmas recruitment campaigns later moving into longer-term careers with Australia Post.

For people looking to earn extra money before Christmas —or potentially take their first step towards a longer career with Australia Post —applications for the 3,500 seasonal positions are open now.
