St Albans: 68-year-old man stabbed from behind during early morning walk
A 68-year-old man has been seriously injured after being stabbed from behind while taking an early morning walk in Melbourne’s west —in what police believe was an apparently unprovoked attack.
The incident occurred near Ginifer Railway Station in St Albans at about 3.20am on Thursday, 3 September.
According to Victoria Police —the local man was walking near the intersection of Mulhall Drive and St Albans Road when an unknown man approached him from behind and attacked him.
The victim suffered a laceration to his lower back and a puncture wound to his shoulder.
Despite being injured, the 68-year-old was able to contact a family member —who then alerted police. He managed to make his way home, where ambulance paramedics treated him before transporting him to hospital with serious injuries.
Police said there appeared to have been no confrontation immediately before the stabbing. No demands were made and there was reportedly no exchange of words between the victim and his attacker.
Investigators are therefore yet to establish a motive for the attack, which at this stage appears to have been unprovoked.
The alleged attacker fled immediately after the stabbing and was last seen running towards Mulhall Drive.
Police have described the man they are searching for as Caucasian, solidly built and wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident. No arrest had been announced as of Thursday afternoon.
The attack has prompted a police appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Ginifer Railway Station, Mulhall Drive or St Albans Road around the time of the stabbing.
Investigators are also seeking information from anyone who may have seen a person matching the description of the offender leaving the area during the early hours of Thursday morning.
The investigation remains ongoing.
