Victoria St: Teenager Charged Over $2 Million Abbotsford Business Blaze
A 16-year-old boy has been charged over a major fire —that caused an estimated $2 million in damage and destroyed or damaged numerous businesses along Victoria Street on the Richmond–Abbotsford border last month.
The fire occurred in the early hours of Monday, 6 July 2026 —when emergency services were called to a convenience store on Victoria Street at about 4.15am. According to Victoria Police, an allegedly stolen Mazda CX-5 was driven into the business before the building was set alight. The alleged offenders then fled the scene on foot.
The blaze quickly spread to neighbouring premises, affecting multiple businesses along the busy retail strip. Fire Rescue Victoria said up to 10 businesses were impacted, while other reports have described damage extending across as many as 12 businesses. About 80 firefighters battled the blaze for approximately 90 minutes before it was brought under control.
The incident also put lives at risk. Two women who were living in one of the adjoining businesses were forced to flee as the fire spread. Police subsequently included reckless conduct endangering life among the charges laid against the teenager.
On Friday, 14 August —detectives from the Yarra Crime Investigation Unit executed a warrant at a property in the Moonee Valley area, where they arrested the 16-year-old boy. He has been charged with arson, reckless conduct endangering life and theft of a motor vehicle. He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear before a children’s court at a later date.
The fire has had a significant impact on local traders, with businesses losing premises, equipment and income. Reports indicate that more than 30 workers were affected by the destruction, while several long-established businesses were forced to confront major losses.
The Victoria Street blaze —is also being investigated against the wider backdrop of alleged organised-crime and arson activity affecting businesses across Melbourne. Police have previously investigated threatening messages and alleged links between some attacks and criminal networks. However, the specific circumstances and any wider connections relating to the Victoria Street fire remain matters for investigators and the courts.
